Senior Pet Month: Exploring Your Aging Pet’s Health and Wellbeing

The term “senior,” is used to describe an aging pet. However, this classification comes at different times for different species and breeds. Cats reach their senior years anywhere between the ages of eight and ten. When it comes to dogs, this number changes depending on the breed and size of the dog. Small dogs are considered senior at the age of eight, whereas large dog breeds reach their senior status around the age of six.

Age-Related Health Conditions in Senior Pets

Age is not an illness. However, there are a wealth of age-related health conditions commonly seen in both cats and dogs. Fortunately, with preventative veterinary care, many of these conditions are treatable. Chronic conditions can even be managed with early intervention and the help of your trusted veterinarian. Some frequently seen age-related health conditions include:

  • Arthritis
  • Dental disease
  • Heart disease
  • Cancer
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • Canine cognitive dysfunction
  • Neurological conditions

The Importance of Veterinary Care for Senior Pets

Veterinary care is always imperative to your pet’s health, but more so as they reach their golden years. When pets age, their health begins rapidly changing, and with that comes a whole new set of veterinary needs. To keep up with these changes, it’s important to schedule routine veterinary check-ups twice annually to consistently monitor and adjust your pet’s care. This may include keeping your pet current on vaccines, adjusting their diet to a low-calorie, nutrient-dense food, and treating or managing new illnesses or health concerns.
