First Kitten Visit

Congratulations on your new kitten! We are so happy you have chosen us to care for the new member of your family! Prior to your first visit, we want to give you a heads up on what to expect and what information we need you to bring.

If you have any vaccine, deworming, or medical history for your kitten, please bring it with you. We want to know what has been done so we can plan what is needed in the future. Many kittens have worms, so even if your kitten has been dewormed, bring a fecal sample to the first visit so we can make sure there aren’t any worms to worry about.

We routinely vaccinate every kitten for feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and pneumonitis (FVRCP).  This vaccine needs to be boosted every 3-4 weeks until your kitten is 16 weeks old.  The series is usually started at 8 weeks of age. All kittens receive the Rabies vaccine, usually with their last FVRCP booster.

If your kitten hasn’t already been tested for Feline Leukemia (FELV), we recommend a quick blood test run in the clinic to make sure your kitten does not have FELV. The test takes about 10 minutes.

Feline leukemia vaccination is currently recommended by the American Association of Feline Practitioners for all kittens, regardless of their lifestyle. Even though you want your kitten to be indoors only, some kittens decide they want to explore and sneak outside, putting them at risk of coming in contact with the disease, so the AAFP recommends being better safe than sorry.  If at the one-year booster appointment your kitten has remained indoors only, FELV vaccine is no longer given.  The initial series is two shots usually at 12 and 16 weeks.

Every kitten receives a complimentary nail trim with the first visit.

We recommend all pets are given permanent identification with a microchip.  We can implant the microchip at any visit.

Finally, we offer kitten wellness and sterilization plans that offer savings on the services needed to keep your pet healthy.  These plans are described in the wellness plan section of our website.  You can sign up for the plans when you come in for your first visit.
