First Puppy Visit

Congratulations on your new puppy! We are so happy you have chosen us to care for the new member of your family! Prior to your first visit, we want to give you a heads up on what to expect and what information we need you to bring.

If you have any vaccine, deworming, or medical history for your puppy, please bring it with you. We want to know what has been done so we can plan what is needed in the future. Most puppies have worms, so even if your puppy has been dewormed, bring a fecal sample to the first visit so we can make sure there aren’t any worms to worry about.

On the first visit, we talk about a lot of things, diet, exercise, vaccine schedule, parasite control, spaying and neutering, socialization, and general wellness. We schedule you for a 30 minute appointment time to make sure we have enough time to go over everything and answer any questions you may have.

Some decisions you will have to make include the types of vaccines needed. We routinely vaccinate every puppy for distemper, adenovirus, parvo, and parainfluenza (DAPP). This vaccine needs to be boosted every 3-4 weeks until your puppy is 16 weeks old.  The series is usually started at 8 weeks of age. All puppies receive the Rabies vaccine, usually with their last DAPP booster.

Optional vaccines are bordetella, also known as the kennel cough vaccine. If your puppy is going to be social: go to puppy class, doggie daycare, groomers, or boarding facilities, it should have this vaccine.  We use the vaccine that is dropped in the nose and give it with any of the DAPP boosters, and it lasts a year.

Leptospirosis is also an optional vaccine. If your puppy will be around wildlife (deer, elks, rats, raccoons) and drinking out of puddles, this vaccine is appropriate. This vaccine is a two-shot initial series and is usually given with the last two DAPP boosters (12 and 16 weeks)

Every puppy receives a complimentary nail trim with the first visit.

We recommend all puppies are permanently identified with a microchip.  We can implant the microchip at any of the puppy wellness visits.

Finally, we offer puppy wellness and sterilization plans that offer savings on the services needed to keep your pet healthy. These plans are described in the wellness plan section of our website.  You can sign up for the plans when you come in for your first visit.
